Not R2D2, but RDR2 - Red Dead Redemption 2.
And yeah ray-tracing is cool, but it's far from required for VR.

what are you talking about @Spontaneous Explosions
"You don't have a flagship VR game without Ray-tracing" According to Valve themselves, from the playtesters, visual fidelity in VR games isn't super important compared to framerate and resolution.
Also "You practically need an RTX GPU to play the game anyway" I've got an RX 580, which is an affordable mid-range card, and it's good enough to play HLA.
"Realistic lighting and reflections would greatly improve the VR experience" Realistic lighting and reflections would improve literally any game experience, because it looks better. VR isn't some special case where a game has to look like RDR2 or else it's impossible to be immersed.

They aren't releasing it as VR exclusive to sell VR headsets, they're doing so because VR is the whole purpose of the game.
The game's development started at Valve when some people were like "hey we should make an aaa vr game, there aren't really any of those"
The game was built from the ground up as a VR game, with it being a Half-Life game because the series works well with VR.
also someone will probably make a flatscreen mod or something at some point lol
