Behavior of other members (Now with 200% more TL;DR!)

Yep, it's another one of Uber's long as heck announcement topics where he rambles on for a while on what you should be doing. If you are low on time or just barely care about my crap, skip to the tl;dr section below. Otherwise be prepared for a very informative read.

 

I've noticed members having some pretty uncouth behavior around here. Some groups of members who hang out often attack other members in a single manner. Call upon their firing squad of friends in case someone doesn't agree with them. This is not having an opinion, this is bullying.

 

I know people will go on to talk about how they have the right to do these things. How they can say whatever they want how they want to. That their rights are equal to real life rights. But the fact of the matter is, you don't have all of your rights. When you sign up here, you agree to follow the rules here. You agree to these rules regardless if you read them or not. We give you the benefit of the doubt that you've read them. We don't question you if you don't, but we won't save you if you didn't read or follow them.

 

In the event member brigading happens, we must defend what's right. We will not censor your comments, we will ask you to just not drag others into your opinions. Because if you have an angry mob sent on a single defenseless member, we will have to police these actions accordingly.

 

The fact that my own colleagues here have gone to these lengths makes me very disappointed. I took this position to keep the peace while respecting member behaviors and actions while keeping the peace, but every single time people find loopholes to what I say. And no matter how much I fight, or other mods/chatmods they have yet another reason to retaliate and explain their actions even though they still violate the rules.

 

Even if your opinions are rowdy/edgy, as long as they don't violate the rules they are fine.

 

We want to keep a nice environment for every member, and don't spoil it with bad actions. 'Poking fun' is consented upon, anything else around that general area  without consent isn't. If we do this, we can all become a happy family where everything is enjoyed and little is forbidden.

 

TL;DR

• REPORT BAD ACTIONS Millions of times members have contacted me via PM, status update, comment on my profile, skype or steam but they never bothered to report it. Why? We need a record of this crap that happens and so the other mods know about it. It just makes everything easier in the longrun.
• Don't brigade members with flaming. Every person caught will be warned; do not pass go do not collect $200.
• Respect the chat mods. They are only trying to keep you from trouble and some people hate the job because you make it hard on them until we show up. If we show up, we will just start sending warning points for willful disobedience and the offense you took without warning.
• Don't make off topic remarks just to offend a user, especially when they are already causing trouble.
• Create the family-friendly environment you see fit. These forums are for all ages, and let's keep it that way.

I don't try to be scary. I just want to create a better forums. We've been doing a good job so far. Let's not make people hate this place now and we'll be set. If you have any input to add, post it below.

Huh. So that's been happening on the forums.

Truth be told, no matter where you try and bully or so, mods will be able to see it. The problem is, they don't actually see it, because they don't know about it. That's the point of the report button, so that mods are aware of a specific post that may or may not violate the rules.

Well said, i can agree on a lot of this, i have notice people fighting against things like fn@, showing no respect to each others opinions, and not even bothering being at least nice, and the part with bullying, i have never bothered to talk much about it, but people do it a lot knowadays, some people just like to be mean to others, to the point where it becomes bullying, and nobody notice, they just think it's a joke, as my teacher tells us, "if the other person is not okay with it, it's not a joke, it's bullying."

David is more unbiased than me. If he saw it happen, I'd lose my job and all trust here. I try to avoid it because there is much more at stake. I don't want to follow the route since the outcome isn't great.

I get what you mean though. Abuse of power is a serious issue and we don't take kindly to tyranny here.

Wanted to highlight this part. This is often the issue that comes into play when I see it happen. The way it's fronted by people is shown like a joke, but it's never consented by and they continue with it.

You bring up good points and help me understand what goes on through the minds of others doing these things.

This might sound weird, but this is probably this best post I've seen in a long time.

Because it's very relative to just about everyone.

I forgot what the syndrome and effect of this is called but I'll post the psychological reasons why; ^{(Note, this is has to do with real life and subconscious thoughts rather then internet)}

1. Vulnerability: We are powerless against 'police/law' realistically. If you can't beat them, join them.
2. Majority: No one wants to be the one alone guy who doesn't agree, so you follow the sheep.
3. Trapped: You don't want to be alone, and you believe if you say true thoughts you'd be hated against.
4. Bystander effect, you believe someone else will stand up in time, so you do nothing. Like how in fights happen in school, you tell me how many people sit there and watch and do nothing?

This is more about real life, rather then being applied to a mod on the internet but it's true and affects just about the average human being.

I forgot what the effect is called, but it affects every human being once they start hitting puberty.

(Which is why you have no shame when you're a child, but you do now I guess)

 

Doesn't mean that everyone only likes uber because we're scared or because he has power, Uber is a genuine person who is actually really nice.

So obviously people do like him as a person.

So Idk if that effect actually applies to anyone here towards uber since is he just an internet mod and not a real life law enforcer, but I wanted to give proper and scientific answer.
