The only time I've ever had that is when I selected a bunch of things that were parented to each other and scaled them down at the same time. I'm assuming it can't handle number that are too small, so when it has to figure out the actual size of an object that's at scale 0.000001 (or whatever the smallest scale size is) parented to ANOTHER object that's at scale 0.000001, it goes backwards into negative numbers and ruins a bunch of math. However, I'm not sure that's what you did here, so I can't really help you.
