If you want it to look better, add more cones. While you risk alpha glitches doing so, it does in fact look better.

 

Namely because this isn't really that close to volumetric lighting, mainly cause it's damn near impossible to achieve in the first place.

Allegedly it will contain 'god rays' which is a good alternative. But it's not quite the same.

It doesn't look volumetric it does look nice though.
