Just started animating any tips

Well for one, you can indeed parent the sword to the character's arm, this will move the sword with the character's arm like it is in his hand.
You got a long journey ahead of you and it's good to admit that you need work. Continue animating pieces like these frequently and you'll be good in no time. I suggest using references so you can "copy" whatever makes the animation stand out in your reference. I suggest that you start with walking animations first, and don't do just a cycle, animate the character starting and stopping (Which are the hardest IMO).

Here's is an animation piece I did for school, try to use this as a point of reference as it does have some complex animations for starters. It's not in mine-imator but everything was animated in keyframes similar to mine-imator.
