Why was custom codec rendering removed?

So MI no longer uses .avi and now it uses .mpeg files that support sound.(.avi video files also support sound.) However, when exporting, there isn't an option to change codecs and it renders in the default codec.(Night time scenes are bleh.) This is kind of a big problem for people that focus on HD rendering and use the lossless codec. Does .mpeg rendering not support custom codecs for rendering or something?

Correct, I'll probably add .avi rendering back as an option, though.

I was expecting the MP4/H.324 Codec. I was wrong.

Glad to hear, if you do add it, will it have sound support as well as .mpeg?

that would help a lot. but i do like the .mpeg. so an option of either would be nice.
