How to control what direction particles emit from?

I have little to no experience with the particle editor, and it's layout still kind of confuses me. However this is something I have yet to figure out, and knowing it would greatly help me.

Edit the XYZ speed, If you want it go go Z -10 and only that direction, make the others 0.  I think. I don't think this might help though.

How do I make an attractor, and what do I select to make it attract to it?

Make a block. And somewhere when you click the Particle Effect it should show an option menu. It will let you set the attractor there
