You can always just import schematics and shrink them to become ears!

Also, if capes aren't working, you could just re-texture your minecraft gear and make one look like a cape.

 You see, I didn't retexture the painting, but it can still be a cape!

You can add capes by resizing a block.  Same goes for ears.  It WOULD be easier to have official support, though, I'll give you that.
