How do you import a world from a public server?

yes ofc it's possible. and yes, you need to import the level.dat, it contains data about the world and it is the file you need to import into mi, but it DOES NOT contain the terrain data. chunks are saved in region files. if it's a vanilla server, you need to get the entire world folder (you need to download it if you are using a host service), and then load the level.dat from it. level.dat is useless without the rest of the world files.

If it's a bukkit based server, it's slightly more complicated since dimentions are stored in different folders, although you can load the overworld the same way.

 

If you don't wanna bother, you can always simply use the world downloader mod. it's a client sided mod that allows you to capture sections of multiplayer worlds you are playing on.
