The lone Orovikan ship flew above the marshy landscape of Porrus. High Command indicated the presence of some powerful artifact within the sector, but the sensors on the gray and yellow ship were not detecting any abnormalities on the surface or beneath the terrain.

The pilot sighed with impatience. As an ace pilot of the Orovikan Military Academy, he should have been assigned a more daring and adventurous task. Why should he, the prestigious fighter pilot that earned the call sign Gold Hawk, the defender of Orovika during the second VEGA - AR war, be subjected to a monotonous game of hide and seek? When he got back, he was going to turn in his letter of resignation to High Command on Virtuis. Perhaps then, out of desperation, they would give him a noteworthy assignment suitable for his expertise.

Gen Bukkit, Hawk's commander, descended from the ship's top-mounted turret to address Hawk's concerns. "I know how you're feeling," he said, interrupting the constant drone of the ship's ion thrusters. "High command sends us off on another goose chase. Just like the time when we were hunting for those space whales, and all we found were a few slimy, giant eggs. Made some good ship polish, though."

Hawk laughed heartily, but at the same time he reminisced of the days of glory. Days where he nearly single-handedly protected Virtuis from the VEGA and AR and maintained Orovikan neutrality. Days where he ran circles around enemy battlecruisers using only a corvette. Days when he would -

A high-pitched beeping interrupted Hawk's daydreaming. The sensors picked up something, but due to Porrus's atmosphere the reading was unclear. It seemed to strengthen when the ship approached the entrance chasm below them. Porrus was dotted with entrance chasms that led to an extensive cave system below the planet's surface. The narrow crevices, dark atmosphere, and toxic plant life, however, prevented any nation from extensively mapping the "second surface," as the cave system was commonly known.

"Sir," Hawk said, "there seems to be something down there, in the entrance chasm."

"Very well," Bukkit replied. "Descend."

Hawk maneuvered the ship into the opening of the entrance chasm. To aid the sensors, he turned on the ship's spot lights so he could visually scan for anomalies. Bukkit joined him, peering out of the ship's main cockpit. The sensors beeped with greater intensity, until the cacophonous rhythm of beeps eventually merged into one continuous tone.

"Sir, what do you make of this?" Hawk inquired. "The space whale chase was pretty crazy, but even they didn't trigger the sensors this much."

Bukkit opened his mouth to respond, but a violent shudder rippled throughout the ship's hull, knocking Bukkit off his feet and throwing Hawk's face into the ship's control panel. Alarm bells rang as the ship verified its own hull integrity. Hawk glanced at the plasma screens in front of him, and the ship was providing results he didn't like.

"Gold Hawk!" Bukkit yelled. "Masks up!"

Hawk managed to activate his Power Helmet's mask right as another explosion ruptured the hull, this time breaching the cockpit. Hawk and Bukkit were thrown out of the ship from the violent decompression, and flailed through the thick Porrusian atmosphere before landing in a field full of mushrooms. Had they not activated their masks sooner, the atmosphere would have corroded their soft tissues and they would be little more than skeletons wearing bits and pieces of Power Armor. The ship crashed onto the floor of the entrance chasm before promptly exploding, raining debris onto the poisonous mushrooms that layered the bottom of the chasm.

Bukkit lay unconscious on the ground, as Hawk tried to revive him. "Gen... Gen! You gotta get up!" he grunted.

A loud roar stopped Hawk from his efforts, causing him to gaze deep into the chasm. Whatever was there was probably the anomaly they were looking for, although Hawk certainly didn't want to now. This new threat... they would have to fight alone.
