I wouldn't say it's much of a status as anyone with low rep can be equally respected as someone with a mountain of rep. Also it's a method for those who agree with someone/something to not have to say anything at all. It's uses go beyond the click of a button when you think about it. I also agree with you Skiedude, the idea of people begging for rep is rather shallow; it really can't be that important to a person.
