Voxy got a reaction from YoshiHunter in saw this on a post, is it a new logo or just an export icon?. if it's a new logo, it
You need to learn the difference between an icon and a logo, then. This is the new logo, which has been sitting in our signatures for a while now:

The filmstrip icon is... just an icon. Who cares? It's just gonna sit in your taskbar or show up as a favicon, and for that purpose, I think it represents 'animation' a looot better than the blurry mess the current icon turns into if you shrink it down, even if isn't as Minecraft-y as the previous one.

Also, saying it's "not appealing" is just a matter of taste. Personally, I find the new icons much more pleasant to look at than ones you can't even properly read unless they're 100px tall.

@Annie-Mienai Wow, that's a very impressive mockup!  A 3D view might be a bit ambitious though, haha!

@Annie-Mienai That's a bit more complicated. The world importer is written in a different language than MI and MB (it's written in C#, MI/MB use GML), which Nimi isn't very familiar with. So I can't make any promises, though I'd very much like to update it as well.

@Annie-Mienai Yup! The hard part is finding the right item to represent 'modeling', but it's being worked on. The world importer will also get a new icon, I'll share it once they're ready to be shown!

    @Voxy I understand perfectly.
On the other hand, I would like to know if Modelbench will also have an icon similar to Mine-Imator? The hexagonal shape of the new Mine-Imator icon intrigues me a bit because the current one for ModelBench is a square. and well, the ModelBench icon with the colors set that way represents this to me:

@Annie-Mienai That's fair, the workbench was a really strong element of the old brand. However, the context has changed. With the new interface, the concept of the workbench will still be there, but it won't be as prominent visually. There won't be this huge workbench image lurking at the top, it will be redesigned to fit the new style better. I also chose not to include the icon as part of the logo, meaning it will only appear on its own and in specific situations, mainly ones where it'd be displayed at small sizes.
The workbench icon, being very complex, just turned messy in said situations. You do recognize the workbench, but you don't recognize the elements that actually tell you this is an animation program, and since the "workbench" element is not part of the brand anymore, it didn't make sense to keep it, hence why I chose to focus on finding a metaphor to represent animation, which ended up being a clapperboard here. I also took steps into making it work with the rest of the branding language, using the same color palette and the same beveled shading I used for our mascot renders.
Using the Minecraft approach of using renders of blocks was a potential idea, but it's flawed. Finding blocks that can represent the program's purpose isn't that easy! The camera block is an obvious answer, but it's a rather obscure block, and displaying it without its legs would make it less recognizable.
This new approach I've chosen is a little radical for sure, but I stand by it, and I believe it has the potential to become a memorable, but distinguishable icon.
    Thanks for the feedback!

Voxy got a reaction from Ghatos in I changed my mind. While it is a non issue and I don't really care if the icon change
Welp, I feel like this is gonna be an exact repeat of what happened when Google updated their app icons, with people complaining about it for a day or two and then collectively forgetting about it, but eh.
I might have a few early designs that might satisfy some of you better, if that's what it takes to end the pings.

IMO It still doesn't feel related to Minecraft, it's just a clapperboard that is pixelated.

Not all of them do, that's why I keep making the distinction between an icon and a logo. Also I've explicitely said I was looking into other designs, jesus christ. Learn to read.

"...than an icon which, as I've said, will basically just sit in a taskbar."
this is entirely wrong, where else is the icon? the logo of the mine-imator forums, the mine-imator website, and the eyes of a brand new user, whom if they saw just a green tape would be turned away, you got to give them something unique that draws them in, not a bland "modern" icon, at least that's my take

Voxy got a reaction from __Mine__ in I can't understand why the new Mine-imator icon Voxy showed is getting so much hate.
Yeah, I don't think two downvotes and a negative comment about is a big deal. If the reaction was stronger and more divisive, then I would've considered designing it differently, but I think the handful of reluctant people will either get used to it over time, or they can just... make a shortcut and edit its icon if they really don't like it. ?
