Parent the sword to a character's arm, position the sword to their hand, have the hand move the sword to where you want to put it, then to stop doing this, I suggest making the sword invisible and making a new sword parented to the body in the same way.

Parent the sword to the characters arm, and put a sword in the location the arm puts it then switch the visibility with them.
