Need better Ambient occlusion

Yeah, sure, there's shadows, but just because there's shadows doesn't mean it's that realistic. It's kind of hard explaining it for me, but the Ambient occlusion in mine imator right now is just buh. I'll just show you the image I made in photoshop: http://oi60.tinypic.com/17efb8.jpg (sorry, the image to url thing on this site is not working for me)

 

The Ambient Occlusion in the software is pretty much a solid color. Defferent sides of the cube will have the same color when the Ambient Occlusion is apply to it. When it's under a shadow is the worst. Here's another Image on what I'm talking about: http://th03.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/f/2014/146/9/4/simon_and_lewis_by_lachlangaming-d7jso8d.png (look at the dark side of the blocks that shadows are casting over, they should not be a solid color, it's just kind of gross).

 

I hope no one is confuse about this. I know I'm bad at explaining things, but I just want some improvement on the lighting and the Ambient Occlusion.
