Here is how I make my rigs:

TUTORIAL:

Step One: Figure out if you are making a movable rig or a statue like rig.

Step Two: Ask yourself if you are basing you rig off of something.

Step Three A: If you are making a movable rig then keep reading. If not, go to Step 3 B. If you are making a movable rig then it might be a bit more harder. To make this easy, my example will be a re-loadable gun. Depending on the gun it will need variable pieces. Here are the usual stuff to make a gun: the gun itself and a magazine. First make the gun without a magazine. Parent all the pieces to one object. Once you are finished, make the mag. Do not parent these anything to the gun, just to the mag. Once you are finished with the mag. You can parent it to the gun. Now continue to Step 4

Step Three B: If your rig is going to be like a statue then continue reading. This is a bit easier than step A. All you need to do is make the rig.

Step Four: There is a big chance you are basing your rig off something whether it is a mod, object/item, ect. There is also a big chance there is a picture of it (or maybe a drawing if you can't find anything). Here is a good way of making your rig better. Download your picture. Make sure it is a png file. If it is not a png file, use paint to convert it (if using windows). In Mine-Imator, make a surface. Change the texture of the surface to your picture. Scale it to the a size you are comfortable with. Now you can make your rig with a picture of it in the background.

Step Five: Now you are done with your rig and you want to show it off. Before taking a picture, make a green background. You can either make a big surface that is green or make the sky green and take away the ground and clouds.

Tips:

If you are going into great detail, don't duplicate objects and keep spawning them in.

If your are not going into detail then duplicating objects is ok.

Advantage of Duplicating:

Less work

Texture will automatically added to all duplicated objects

I recommend using objects instead of blocks/items.
